So last month I decided to finally decide to invest in a professional camera, and even though there were lots to choose from, I ended up picking the Canon EOS M10
I’d been wanting to get one since starting uni earlier in the year and having a photography module in the first semester.
I’ve been doing photography since I was 17 but I’ve never had enough money to buy my own camera. I’d either borrow my dads old one or rent one out from the design department.
Not exactly practical.
I’d been looking at a few different models: the Olympus PEN that pretty much every blogger seems to own, the Canon ESO M3 and the ESO M10.
They’re all compact cameras that are better suited for I wanted to use them for; mainly a mix between my finally photography module at university next year and to up my blog photography.
I’m also considering vlogging at some point, but since I really don’t have the confidence to do that just yet it wasn’t an aspect that was too high on my priority list.
The only problem with both the PEN and the M3 was their price. As a student living solely on my student loan, there was no way I could afford to spend so much money on a camera – no matter how good it would look on my Instagram!
So in the end I decided to go for the Canon EOS M10.
Looking at the specs it was more than good enough for what I need: it would take high quality, professional looking photos for university and my blog while also being lightweight and portable enough to take and use on holiday/day trips.
I bought mine from PC World for £299, which for a camera like this is actually a reasonable price and it was the cheapest place I could find (for a brand new one anyway).
I did consider getting a second hand one from eBay, but they weren’t that much cheaper.
Plus I’d rather spend a little more on a brand new camera, rather than risk a second hand one that might break or have hidden problems.
I’ve been burnt that way before.
The camera was exactly what I was hoping for!
The auto mode is brilliant and really easy to use, which means it’s great for people who have very little knowledge or experience with a professional grade camera.
I’m not going to lie, even though I can manually program a camera I usually just stick it on auto; it produces some really lovely photos and makes taking blog photos quicker and easier.
However the custom mode is also easy to use and has all the feature you would expect on a professional camera.
It comes with a 15-45mm wide-angle lens, which is a great starter and fits lots of different situations.
It blurs the background of your photos without narrowing your photos and the auto focus is easy to use- simply tap on the touchscreen and it will focus to that point.

I thought it would drain the battery pretty badly, but I charged the battery up fully on the day I got it and it lasted a whole week of daily use.
The battery is also very quick to charge, which is a huge bonus as far as I’m concerned.
The main reason I looked at this and the other cameras originally was that it has a tillable screen, perfect for taking selfies and if I decided to start doing vlogs.
This is also really useful if you’re taking a low level or awkwardly angled photos, as you can just tilt the screen as much as you need until you can see the display clearly.
No more twisting yourself into painful positions just to try and get the perfect shot!
One of the best things about this camera is the fact it has a companion app, which allows you to access the photos on it and download them straight to your phone.
This means that if you’re out and about you can instantly take the photos from your camera and upload them onto social media- no computer needed!
The app also has a remote control feature, which is perfect for taking photo of yourself if you don’t have anyone to help you.
You don’t even have to guess if the shot is framed right as it shows your cameras display on your phone screen.
Overall I don’t know how I ever managed without it!
Yes I was happy enough taking photos on my iPhone (as I know so many bloggers do) but I much prefer how my blog and photos are looking after I’ve started using the Canon EOS M10
