Qualcomm introduced the first mobile processor capable of operating at frequencies above 3 GHz. We are talking about an updated model of the flagship eight-core Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset. Compared with its predecessor for the new mobile platform, the manufacturer claims an almost 10 percent increase in productivity in games and applications related to the operation of machine learning algorithms.
The updated Snapdragon 865 Plus mobile platform is based on one Kryo 585 Prime core with a clock frequency of up to 3.1 GHz, which is a 10 percent increase compared to last year’s SD865 chip, whose frequency is 2.84 GHz. In addition, the new processor is equipped with three Kryo 585 Gold cores operating with a frequency of 2.42 GHz, as well as four Kryo 585 Silver cores with a frequency of 1.8 GHz.
Like the usual version, the updated Snapdragon series flagship chip supports working with screens of mobile devices with a refresh rate of 144 Hz. Compared with last year’s version of the processor, the company also claims a 10 percent increase in performance of the Adreno 650 graphics subsystem.
Snapdragon 865 Plus received support for the new FastConnect 6900 module (the original Snapdragon 865 has support for FastConnect 6800). The chip is designed to work in Wi-Fi networks of the sixth version (Wi-Fi 6E) in the new frequency range of 6 GHz, which provides data transfer speeds up to 3.6 Gb / s. It also claims support for the latest Bluetooth 5.2 standard and the presence of a dual Bluetooth antenna. And using the updated aptX Adaptive and aptX Voice codecs will be able to provide wireless transmission of music and voice with sampling frequencies of 96 and 32 kHz, respectively.
The updated Snapdragon 865 Plus mobile platform is still paired with the Snapdragon X55. It is a 5G – 2G 7-nanometer single-chip multimode modem that supports frequency ranges below 6 GHz and the 5G NR millimeter wave spectrum with download speeds of up to 7 Gb / s and download speeds of up to 3 Gb / s, as well as category 22 LTE at speeds downloads up to 2.5 Gbps.
Among other features of the Snapdragon 865 Plus, which are also present in the regular Snapdragon 865, it claims support for Quick Charge 4.0+ fast charging technology and efficient work with artificial intelligence (machine learning) algorithms.
Qualcomm notes that the first devices based on the updated Snapdragon 865 Plus chip will be presented in the third quarter of 2020. Already aware of at least two gaming smartphones that will receive this processor. They will be ASUS ROG Phone 3, as well as Lenovo Legion, which we recently reported. Both devices will be officially unveiled this month. For the ROG-smartphone, the announced announcement date is July 22.
