DJI MAVIC AIR S2 Fly
The new DJI MAVIC Air S2, successor to the DJI’s famous Mavic Air 2, is finally here with better upgrades. It has not been quite some time when DJI released its previous drone. They keep working to enhance their mid-tier Mavic drone range. The price is just 200$ more than the previous drone costing 999$. It further includes a single battery and charger, 3 pairs of propellers and the DJI RC-N1 controller. The Fly more combo adds up with three batteries, four ND filters and a shoulder bag at the price of 1299$ which is approximately equal to 3759AED.
What are the upgrades?
The Air S2 comes with some notable new features and improvements. It comes with increase in sensor size and resolution with up to 1-inch, capable of shooting 20 MP photos, 5.4K video, and 4K up to 60fps. Along with that, it has two sensors on the front, to enable drone to see farther at higher speeds. It also captures video at a higher 150Mbps with zoom in of 4x and 8x in 1080p called as “Binocular zooming”. The video colors in Air S2 have a Normal 8-bit, D-Log 10-bit and HLG 10-bit capture.
The new drone has more range-control, with ability to take a ‘MasterShot’ combining the pre-programmed shots in a single take. The upgraded model has obstacle avoidance from four side; front, back, down and up.
But the caveats are there too…
Nearly similar to its predecessor, its 25g heavier and has reduced time flight from 33 to 31 minutes. Despite the highest 4K frame rate, it captures photos with some significant cropping. It does not use its complete 1-inch sensor in that mode. While filming in D-Log or HDR, you cannot zoom in. The standard color profile is only where zoom can be enabled.
Even though the sensors are there, the front sensor is slightly less effective. The Air S2 cannot fly into things in Normal and Cine mode. The sports mode turns off all obstacle detection, hence, you are at your own risk. There is also an issue with stabilization as there is some unwanted shakiness in the videos.
DJI MAVIC AIR S2 | Still worth it?
Regardless of some shortcomings, the Air S2 gives the best image results and video quality. It’s still not a deal breaker with better camera target detection and performance in windy conditions. It provides with great and improved detail and sharp definition quality. The photos are phenomenal in 20 megapixels while you the perfect exposure. The raw footage is also available to edit in choice of your own software. Therefore, it’s hard to beat Air S2 for the size and price with upgraded results.
